Laboratory NEWS

The purpose of my Laboratory in the basement is to provide a dedicated space for creativity and craftsmanship, where I can design and build intricate Steampunk items, perform essential repairs, and tackle a variety of projects in a clean and organized environment. This setup not only fuels my passion for making but also allows me to efficiently manage multiple projects at once, making the most of my winter days indoor.

Laboratory News

This page for my basement Laboratory projects. I spend the winters in the basement working on projects that need a clean environment. I spend my free time creating STEAMPUNK or Diagnosis & Maintenance on Clocks.

My Dear Friends, Family, & Fan Club!

I wanted to inform you that we experienced flooding in July, which has affected our ongoing operations. We began the demolition process in October and will be replacing the drain tile in our 50-year-old home this January 13th. After these repairs, we will be restoring our basement into a livable space. In the meantime, I will be setting up a makeshift work area, although I may have limited access to some items due to the ongoing organization. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time!

Best,
BillyJo

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you call it your Laboratory?

So, I like to call my workshop my "Laboratory," and let me tell you why! My first project was this misfit clock with a ticker that just wouldn’t tick. I ran some tests, but it needed open-heart surgery! I popped the heart out, gave it a good cleaning, and lubed all its joints with a syringe—talk about a clock in need of a spa day! Then, when I reattached the heart and started the testing, I couldn't help but shout, "It's alive!" Who knew bringing a clock back to life could be so dramatic? Maybe next time I’ll throw in a little lightning for effect!

How long does it take to create a Steampunk Project

Creating a Steampunk project is indeed a multifaceted endeavor that can vary significantly in terms of time based on several variables. Here are the factors that can influence the timeline:

1. **Project Complexity**: A simple project may take a few hours (like a small accessory), while a more intricate one (like a detailed cosplay or a large display piece) could take several weeks or months.

2. **Design and Planning**: The time spent on initial design concepts, sketches, and planning materials can also add to the timeline. This can range from a few hours to several days.

3. **Materials Availability**: If you have most of the required materials on hand, it can significantly reduce the time. However, sourcing unique or specific Steampunk components could take days or weeks.

4. **Cleaning and Preparation**: Preparing items can take time, especially if they require cleaning, disassembly, or modification to fit your vision. Depending on the condition of the materials, this could take an hour to a few days.

5. **Construction**: The actual assembly time can vary widely based on complexity and skill level. This phase might take anywhere from a few hours to several days, depending on how detailed the work is.

6. **Drying Times**: Paints, glues, stains, and rust treatments require drying times that can range from minutes to several days. It's common to wait for multiple layers to dry, especially if applying protective coats or finishes.

7. **Testing and Adjustments**: If the project includes functional elements (like lights or moving parts), you’ll likely need time for testing and calibrating. This additional phase can add several hours to days, especially if modifications are necessary.

8. **Finishing Touches**: Details like final embellishments, weathering, and polishing can also take considerable time. This can range from a few hours to another few days, depending on the level of detail you want.

Overall, a rough estimate for a medium to complex Steampunk project could range from a couple weeks to several months of active work, depending on how much time I can dedicate to it each day. For larger or more intricate pieces, the timeline could stretch to several months, particularly with frequent testing and adjustments.

Can I use some of my things for a project?

Thank you all for your wonderful feedback! I truly appreciate your enthusiasm for my work. Here are some insights from our conversations:

1. **Repurposing Treasures**: Many of you have expressed enjoyment in seeing how everyday items, like those from junk drawers or old jewelry boxes, can be transformed into beautiful showcases. It reinforces the idea that every object has potential and a story to tell.

2. **Personal Items**: It’s heartwarming to hear about the personal items you've entrusted me with, such as clocks, old radios, driftwood and even a tree root. Each piece carries its own history, and I love being able to honor that in my creations.

3. **Gift Giving**: I'm thrilled to know that some of you have chosen my pieces as gifts. It’s always special to create something that carries personal significance for someone else.
